Identity and Role Transitions Support
At certain points in life, the roles and identities that once shaped who you are begin to change.
This may happen gradually, or all at once. What once felt familiar may no longer fit, leaving you unsure of who you are now or what comes next.
You may still be moving through daily life, but with a quiet sense that something has shifted.
Identity and role transitions counselling offers space to make sense of these changes and to find steadier ground as your life reorganises.
This might be where you find yourself
You may recognise this experience if you are:
- adjusting to retirement or changes in work and professional identity
- navigating job loss, redundancy, or career transition
- moving out of a long-held role or position
- becoming or ceasing to be a carer
- experiencing changes in parenting roles or family identity
- living with changes in health, capacity, or independence
- questioning who you are outside of the roles you have held
These experiences can feel unsettling, even when the change is expected or chosen.
You may feel as though something of you has been lost, or that you are no longer anchored in the way you once were.
What this can feel like
Identity and role transitions often affect more than just practical aspects of life.
You may feel:
- unsure of who you are without a familiar role
- disconnected from a sense of purpose or direction
- less confident in yourself or your decisions
- uncertain about what matters now
- caught between who you were and who you are becoming
There can be a sense of being in between, where what was has ended but what comes next has not yet taken shape.
This experience is often disorienting, but it is also a natural part of change.
Why this can feel so unsettling
Roles often give structure, meaning, and a sense of identity.
When these shift or fall away, it is not only practical life that changes, but how you understand yourself.
You may find yourself asking:
- Who am I without this role?
- What matters to me now?
- What does my life look like from here?
These are not questions that need immediate answers. They are part of an unfolding process.
How I work with identity and role transitions
In our work together, we focus on both the emotional and practical aspects of change.
This may include:
- exploring the impact of the role or identity that has changed
- recognising and working with any grief connected to that change
- supporting you through uncertainty without pressure to resolve it quickly
- helping you reconnect with what feels meaningful and important
- finding ways to live that feel workable and sustainable now
Some sessions may focus more on emotional processing, others on practical adjustments, and often a combination of both.
The pace and direction of the work are guided by what is most supportive for you.
Identity transitions and grief
Changes in identity often involve forms of loss that are not always recognised.
You may be grieving:
- a role that once gave structure or purpose
- a version of yourself that no longer fits
- a future you had expected
- a sense of certainty or belonging
This kind of loss can be subtle and easily minimised, but it is no less real.
