Outdoor Counselling & Nature-Based Therapy
Outdoor Counselling Melbourne
Outdoor counselling offers the opportunity to meet in natural settings rather than within a traditional therapy room. Being outside can create a different pace for therapy, with space to walk, pause, reflect, and engage with what emerges within both the conversation and the surrounding environment.
For many people, natural surroundings provide a sense of anchoring that supports feeling calmer, more grounded, and better able to reflect.
People experiencing grief, major life transitions, overwhelm, or chronic disorganisation often describe feeling disconnected from themselves, their routines, their environment, or their sense of belonging. Outdoor therapy can offer a different way of slowing down and reconnecting with what matters.
Outdoor sessions take place in local parklands and natural settings chosen for privacy, accessibility, and comfort.
There are two ways we may work outdoors, depending on your preferences and the kind of support you are seeking.
Walk-and-Talk Therapy
Walk-and-talk therapy involves having a counselling conversation while walking side-by-side in a natural setting. Many people find it easier to talk while moving rather than sitting face-to-face in a therapy room.
Walking at a gentle pace can reduce pressure and create a natural rhythm for conversation. The focus remains on the therapeutic dialogue while movement provides a supportive flow.
Walk-and-talk sessions typically run for 60 minutes.

Nature-Based Therapy (Ecotherapy)
Nature-based therapy, sometimes referred to as ecotherapy, is a slower, more reflective form of outdoor therapy in which the natural environment becomes part of the therapeutic process.
Nature can offer moments of grounding, awareness, reflection, and connection with place that support the work unfolding in therapy. For some people, being outdoors creates a greater sense of spaciousness and helps them engage with difficult experiences in a way that feels steadier and more manageable.
Sessions may involve walking, sitting, pausing, or simply noticing what is present in the surroundings.
Because this approach allows more space for reflection and integration, sessions typically run for 90 minutes.

A Different Kind of Therapeutic Space
Working outdoors can bring a different quality to the therapeutic process. Some people find it easier to speak openly while walking side-by-side rather than sitting face-to-face in a room. Others notice moments of clarity, grounding, or emotional spaciousness simply through being in natural surroundings.
Outdoor counselling offers another way of meeting what is present, at a pace that feels steady and manageable.
