Walk-and-Talk Therapy in Melbourne

Walk and Talk Therapy Melbourne

Outdoor counselling that integrates movement, nature, and reflection

Walk-and-talk therapy is a form of outdoor counselling where therapeutic conversations happen while you walk side by side in natural settings.

Many people find it easier to talk while moving than sitting face-to-face in a therapy room. Walking can reduce pressure, create a natural rhythm for conversation, and provide space for reflection while we explore what is happening in your life.

You don’t need to be fit: just open to working in a different kind of space.

Why Walk-and-Talk Therapy?

This approach may suit you if:

  • You’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or disconnected

  • Indoor sessions do not feel like the right fit

  • You are grieving a loss and find it easier to talk while moving
  • You’re navigating a life transition and want space to reflect and move forward

  • You’re seeking relief, insight, or grounding in a more spacious setting

For some people, walking side-by-side rather than face-to-face makes it easier to talk about difficult experiences. Others notice that being outdoors creates a greater sense of spaciousness and helps them feel calmer, more grounded, or better able to reflect.

Walk-and-talk therapy focuses primarily on the therapeutic conversation while moving together through a natural environment. If you are interested in a slower, more reflective approach where the natural environment becomes part of the therapeutic process itself, you may also wish to explore Nature-Based Therapy (Ecotherapy).

What to Expect

Initial Intake
We begin with an online or phone session to discuss your needs and goals, and to determine whether outdoor counselling feels like the right fit.

Session Format
Walk-and-talk sessions run for 60 minutes and are conducted at a gentle, comfortable pace. We may pause or sit as needed.

Locations
Sessions take place in Melbourne’s north-eastern suburbs, including parklands and trails around Eaglemont and Heidelberg. Other areas may be available by request.

Weather Considerations
We walk in most weather, except when it’s unsafe or uncomfortable (e.g. storms, strong winds, heatwaves, or total fire bans). In those cases, we can shift the session to Telehealth.

What to Bring
Please dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes. Bring layers, a hat, sunscreen or a rain jacket depending on the season.

Why Walking Outdoors Can Help

Being outdoors changes the feel of a counselling session. Walking side-by-side can make conversation feel less formal, while movement can help some people think, talk or settle more easily.

For people navigating grief, life transitions, overwhelm, or chronic disorganisation, walking outdoors can offer a different way to have a therapeutic conversation without needing to sit face-to-face in a consulting room.

The focus remains on the counselling conversation. If you are looking for an approach where the natural environment becomes a more active part of the therapeutic process, you may also wish to explore Nature-Based Therapy (Ecotherapy).

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be fit or sporty?
No. Walks are slow and gentle. We pause as needed, and we pace the session to your comfort.

What if I become emotional during the walk?
That’s welcome. There is no pressure to hold anything in. We can stop, sit, or be with what’s present.

Is it private enough in a public space?
We choose quieter tracks where possible and remain mindful of other people around us. As with any counselling in a public setting, we can’t guarantee complete privacy, so we can talk through any concerns before deciding whether walk-and-talk therapy is right for you.

What if I prefer not to walk on a certain day?
We can always switch to an online Telehealth session if that feels more comfortable at the time.
